When the weather is chilly outside, there’s no better time to cozy up as a family and make some creative crafts. Here are some fun winter-themed projects from Lakeshore Learning.
Playful Penguin (Ages 5 and up)
Make and decorate this whimsical wintertime friend.
What You’ll Need:
• White paper bag
• Construction paper in black, white and orange
• Silver glitter tempera paint
• Googly eyes
• Newspaper or recycled paper
• Lakeshore Easy-Stick Glitter Shapes or stickers
• Yarn
• Glue
• Scissors
• Stapler
• Hole punch
• Penguin template
Step 1: Stuff a white paper bag with newspaper or recycled paper. Fold the top over and staple it closed to create a body for your penguin.
Step 2: Trace the penguin head and wings from the template (bit.ly/2cylekg)onto black construction paper, then cut them out. Trace the feet and beak onto orange construction paper, then cut them out, too.
Step 3: Paint the penguin body and wings with silver glitter paint. Set aside to dry.
Step 4: When the paint is dry, glue the wings, head, beak and feet to the body.
Step 5: Cut two circles out of white construction paper. Glue these to the penguin’s head. Glue googly eyes in the middle of the circles.
Step 6: Decorate the penguin with glitter shapes or stickers.
Step 7: Punch a hole at the top of the penguin. String a loop of yarn through the hole for display.
Mitten Bookmarks (Ages 5 and up)
Never lose your place – or a mitten – with these adorable cold-weather bookmarks.
What You’ll Need:
• Mitten template
• Felt in a variety of colors
• Foam sheets
• Acrylic gemstones, Lakeshore Flexible Foam Shapes or Easy-Stick Glitter Shapes
• Glue
• Ribbon (¼-inch wide)
• Marker
• Scissors
Step 1: Print and cut out the mitten template (bit.ly/1gVlniy). Using a marker, trace the two mittens onto felt.
Step 2: Cut the foam sheets into two strips that are ½ inch wide and 2 inches long.
Step 3: Cut a 5-inch-long piece of the ribbon.
Step 4: Attach a strip to each mitten to make a cuff across the bottom.
Step 5: Decorate the mittens with gemstones, foam shapes or glitter shapes.
Step 6: Glue one end of the ribbon to the back of each mitten. Allow the glue to dry completely.
Step 7: Use the mittens as bookmarks for winter reading selections.
